Louisiana Pest Control License Requirements

Louisiana regulates pest control through the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF). The state's warm, humid subtropical climate and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico create some of the most challenging pest conditions in the country. Termites, mosquitoes, cockroaches, and rodents are persistent concerns throughout the state.

LDAF requires all pest control operators and businesses to be properly licensed. The state maintains strict regulations, particularly for termite control, reflecting the serious structural damage that Formosan subterranean termites cause to Louisiana properties each year.

Louisiana certification exams are administered by LDAF at testing locations throughout the state, including Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport. The core exam covers pesticide safety, label comprehension, environmental protection, and Louisiana laws. Category exams address specialized topics for each type of pest control.

A passing score of 70% is required. Exams are offered on scheduled dates throughout the year. Study materials are available through the LSU AgCenter. A 30-day waiting period applies for retaking failed exams.

Registered Technicians may begin work under direct supervision immediately. Commercial Applicator certification requires passing examinations. Structural Pest Control Operators must have at least 2 years of documented experience in structural pest control before applying for operator status.

A high school diploma or GED is required. The LSU AgCenter provides training programs, workshops, and study materials for certification exam preparation. Additional training in Formosan termite identification and management is recommended given Louisiana's unique termite challenges.

Louisiana pest control licensing fees include: Commercial Applicator exam: $50. Operator license: $200 annually. Business license: $150 annually. Registered Technician registration: $25. Category exam fee: $25 each. Renewal fee: $100. Late renewal: $50 penalty.

Louisiana commercial applicator certifications must be renewed annually. Renewal requires completion of 6 continuing education credits per year, including credits in core safety and category-specific topics. Business and operator licenses must also be renewed annually with current insurance documentation.

Louisiana requires pest control businesses to carry general liability insurance of at least $300,000 per occurrence and $500,000 aggregate. Companies performing termite control must maintain a surety bond or termite damage repair fund. Workers' compensation insurance is required for all employers.

Louisiana considers reciprocity with other states on a case-by-case basis. Applicants from other southeastern states may be eligible for expedited certification. All applicants must pass Louisiana's laws and regulations exam and meet insurance requirements regardless of out-of-state credentials.
