A minimum score of 70% is required to pass. Exams are offered on a regular schedule. Study materials are available through the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. A 14-day waiting period applies for retaking failed exams.

Registered Technicians may begin working under direct supervision without prior experience. Commercial Applicator certification is obtained through examination without a strict experience requirement. Practical training and on-the-job experience are strongly recommended before taking the certification exams.

A high school diploma or GED is recommended. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service offers training programs, workshops, and study materials for certification exam preparation. No specific college degree is required.

Kentucky pest control licensing fees include: Commercial Applicator exam: $50. Business license: $100 annually. Registered Technician registration: $25. Category exam fee: $25 each. Annual renewal: $50. Late renewal: $25 penalty.

Kentucky commercial applicator certifications are valid for 3 years. Renewal requires completion of 12 continuing education credits during the certification period or re-examination. Business licenses must be renewed annually. CEU courses are available through UK Extension and approved providers.

Kentucky requires pest control businesses to carry general liability insurance of at least $300,000 per occurrence. Workers' compensation insurance is required for businesses with employees. Additional bonding may be required for companies performing termite treatments.

Kentucky considers reciprocity with other states on a case-by-case basis. Applicants with certifications from states with equivalent programs may be eligible for expedited licensing. The Kentucky laws and regulations exam is generally required for all out-of-state applicants.
